Mount Vernon baseball started the week off with a sweep over Center Point-Urbana at home Monday, June 8, then later the Mustangs got swept by No. 2 Marion on the road Thursday, June 11.
That’s life in the WaMaC.
“It was a step in the right direction,” Mount Vernon coach Charles Chatman said. “We’re still in the phase of trying to figure things out.”
Against CPU, the Mustangs won 7-6 and 13-5.
In the opener, the Stormin’ Pointers scored one run in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead, but the Mount Vernon responded with two in the bottom of the seventh to walk it off.
That came courtesy of a Mikey Ryan double off the wall.
“Mikey did a good job of staying behind the baseball,” Chatman said. “We didn’t play a clean day of baseball, but we continued to fight.”
Landon Wilson got the win in relief, following 5 strong innings from Easton Reasland.
Reasland and Gabe Grafft each hit 2-for-3 at the plate. Cael Foreman hit a double.
In the nightcap, Koen Wiebel got the pitching win, giving up just four hits and striking out four over 4.2 innings. Eli Casey and Kolter Flockhart closed it out.
Gabe Grafft hit 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Porter Chatman and Foreman each collected a pair of hits. Chatman also had three stolen bases.
Then at Marion, the Mustangs lost 11-5 and 7-4.
“We played well against Marion, and were in it for most of the game,” Chatman said. “They just did some things better than us.”
Mount Vernon had seven hits in the first game. Foreman hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and Drew Thurn and Grafft each had 2 RBIs.
In the second game, the Mustangs had 10 hits. Reasland hit 4-for-4 with a double, and Ryan and Chatman each had two hits.
Two other games, at Bellevue Marquette on Wednesday, June 10, and a game Saturday, June 13, at Walt Anderson Field against Webster City, were both cancelled due to bad weather.
The Mustangs still got in their trip to the College World Series in Omaha. “It was nice to do some team building,” Chatman said.
