The good times kept rolling for the Mount Vernon softball team (15-1, 8-0 WaMaC East).
The fourth-ranked (3A) Mustangs opened the week with a sweep of WaMaC thorn in their side, No. 9 (3A) Center Point-Urbana, on Monday, June 8.
Mount Vernon won at home, 6-1 and 6-2. each had 2 RBIs.
“It was a nice, dominant win for us,” Mount Vernon coach Robin Brand said. “CPU doesn’t wind us up at all. The girls were comfortable and calm.”
CPU is the team that beat the Mustangs in regional play the last two seasons.
In the opener, Hayden Gookin pitched a 3-hitter, striking out 13.
Offensively, the Mustangs had 10 hits. Brynlee Bettcher hit 3-for-3 and Sorell Telecky hit 2-for-3. Gookin and Annabelle Smith hit doubles and each had 2 RBIs.
In the nightcap, Kinley Nissen got the pitching win, scattering six hits and striking out five.
Lucy Wischmeyer hit a triple, Bettcher hit a double, and Sophia Patten was 2-for-4.
On Friday, the Mustangs won at No. 13 (2A) Iowa City Regina, 8-0 in five innings. Gookin was sharp, pitching a perfect game with 10 strikeouts.
At the plate, Wischmeyer hit 2-for-4. Bettcher had a double and 3 RBIs, and Patten also had a double.
“Our defense was great and backed Hayden up,” Brand said. “Offensively, we just did a great job of coming out and attacking.”
A twinbill at Marion on Wednesday, June 10, was postponed to Thursday, June 11, and then postponed again to July 2.
The good news is Brand got to do a little scouting, and the team picked up a few unusual June practices.
“The girls are in a good place and continue to work hard,” Brand said.
