Never mind the cold temperatures (in late May), the boys of summer are here. Mount Vernon baseball went 1-2 during its first week of play.
On Opening Day, Monday, May 18, the Mustangs split a doubleheader at Ash Park against North Scott.
Mount Vernon won the opener, 5-2, then lost 7-6.
In the opener, Landon Wilson and Cael Foreman combined to throw a five-hitter.
Offensively, Drew Thurn had two hits, and Mikey Ryan had a double and an RBI.
The Lancers rallied for three runs in the sixth inning of Game 2.
Easton Reasland had two hits, including a double. The Mustangs used six pitchers, on a bullpen day.
But Chatman was upbeat from what he saw.
“We’re going to have a bunch of games like that as we try to find guys to fill the (pitching) void of the guys we lost,” Chatman said. “But I’m uber-encouraged. We are ahead of schedule.”
Two days later, the Mustangs dropped their first road game, falling at Clinton, 6-1.
Mount Vernon (1-2) had six hits, two by Reasland. Ryan had a double.
Reasland pitched four innings, followed by Eli Casey (0-1) and Kolter Flockhart.
It was a solid first week for Reasland, a sophomore and new third baseman.
“He’s being aggressive in the box,” Chatman said. “He had an exceptional week, without a doubt.”
Chatman also priased senior Drew Thurn, who had two hits against the River Kings.
“He squared some balls up,” Chatman said. “He’s trying really hard to lead a bunch of young guys.”
