Once again, the Mount Vernon girls’ track team heads to the blue oval in Des Moines this week trying to run down a Class 3A state title.
The Mustangs finished second last year, to ADM. They were fourth in 2024. And fifth in 2023.
Mount Vernon qualified 13 events (doubling up two) during the 3A State Qualifier on Thursday, May 14, at Armstrong Family Field. The Mustangs then got five more entries once at-large spots were determined.
The Mustangs won the SQM title with 166 team points, topping second-place Williamsburg (139) and third-place Waverly-Shell Rock (111).
Senior Cali Whitaker and junior Evelyn Moeller continued to lead the way for the Mustangs.
Whitaker won the 100, 200 and was second in the 400. She also ran the anchor leg on the winning sprint medley (with Lucy Wischmeyer, Taylor Franck and Grace Hale).
Moeller won the 3,000, 1,500 and 800, and ran the anchor leg on the second-place distance medley (with Courtney Thurn, Khloe Karminski and Eastin Whisner).
Second-place finishers Thursday included Wischmeyer (long jump), Cora Smith (3,000), Franck (100), and Kiersten Swart (400 hurdles).
The 4×800 (Edith Dawson, Swart, Sorell Telecky, Caroline Rupe) also qualified by placing in the top two, and Friday the Mustangs added the 4×200 (Wischmeyer, Franck, Skylar Pasker, Hale), 4×400 (Charlie Stewart, Rupe, Swart, Hale) and shuttle hurdle relays (Swart, Adrienne Ruhland, Annabelle Smith, Karminski) with at-large spots.
That’s 17 different girls earning a spot. The Mustangs are strong at the top of their lineup, but also deep.
Boys
The Mount Vernon boys won’t be chasing a team title, but they could come home with some medals.
Both the 4×800 (Chasen Caskey, Benjamin Brinkmann, Logan Ericson, Dawson Scheil) and distance medley (Toby Neal, Logan Stanerson, Holden Hlavacek, Scheil) relays won gold at the SQM, and both are ranked as the fourth-best in 3A.
“I think their goal is to go there and medal,” Mount Vernon Coach Ryan Whitman said. “We’ll see how it goes.”
Scheil also qualified in the 800 by winning the SQM in 1:58.91.
On Friday, the Mustangs added Brinkmann (800), Scheil (1,600), Caskey (1,600) and Leo Tharp (3,200) plus the sprint medley relay of Neal, Teddy Bonewald, Stanerson, Hlavacek.
“I was really happy with the way the guys came in and ran (at the SQM),” Whitman said. “They were focused, and were cheering each other on.”
Waverly-shell Rock won the SQM team title. Mount Vernon was fourth.
