The Mount Vernon girls’ soccer team had three games in three days last week, going 2-1.
“Soccer is 50 percent mental,” Mount Vernon Coach Angie Knies said. “Our team hit another gear and really figured it out.”
The week started with a 3-0 win over Benton Community on Tuesday, May 12. Alaina Sellner had two goals and Courtney Franck had one. Assists were credited to Emara Perreault, Miranda Sellner and Liliana Grosse.
The next night, the Mustangs beat No. 15 (1A) Regina, 2-1. Miranda Sellner had both goals, including one on a free kick.
“Against Regina we really pushed through,” Knies said. “We had three starters sit, and the team stepped up. Emma Hoffman gave great effort.”
The Mustangs finished the week with a rescheduled game against Solon. The Spartans won, 1-0, at the Cornell Soccer Field.
“We were a little bit tired,” Knies said.
Mount Vernon (9-5-1) outshot Solon 13 to 8, and 9 to 4 in shots on goal, but just couldn’t connect. Laeni Hinkle hit both Spartan goals.
The Mustangs wrapped up the regular season with trips to Anamosa and West Liberty. They open Class 2A regional play on Thursday, May 28, at Marion. The Wolves nipped the Mustangs, 1-0, back on April 28.
“Just remember what we are good at, and move forward,” Knies said.
Win and No. 10 Cedar Rapids Xavier (6-2-3) are lurking on June 2. The other side of the bracket includes No. 6 North Polk (9-3-1), Newton (5-8-1) and Boone (3-7-4).
