Mount Vernon boys’ soccer is about ready to start chasing its second state tournament trip in program history (2016).
No. 6 in Class 2A, the Mustangs beat Benton, 4-0, and Solon, 4-1, last week to improve to 12-3-1.
Their 2A substate opener is Wednesday, May 27, against either Washington (5-8-2) or Central DeWitt (1-15-1).
The substate final is Friday, May 29. Solon (8-4-5), Fairfield (9-5-1) and Mid-Prairie (4-8-3) are on the other side of the bracket.
Jaxon Anderson has been the golden toe, lately. He scored a hat trick against both Benton and Solon. Matthew Winkler had the fourth goal against the Bobcats and Carter Gadberry did the same against the Spartans at Cornell Soccer Field.
Cash Luneckas (2), Caleb Norton (3), Caiden Boesenberg and Issac Dausener had assists.
The Mustangs close the regular season with a home game against Waverly-Shell Rock on Thursday, May 21, at Armstrong Field.
