Mount Vernon girls soccer went 1-1-1 last week, starting with the 1-1 tie Tuesday, May 5, at Independence.
Courtney Franck scored the lone goal on an assist from Miranda Sellner.
On Thursday, May 7, the Mustangs lost to No. 14 (1A) Vinton-Shellsburg, 4-0. But bounced back to win at Bellevue Marquette, 3-0, on Saturday, May 9.
Franck had two goals and Sellner had one. Rose Pisarik provided an assist.
Mount Vernon Coach Angie Knies, who started the year wanting to spread out the scoring, is okay with going to the hot foot.
“If someone, like Courtney, is on a hot streak, you want to give them the ball,” Knies said. “She’s been really consistent and we lean on her a lot, even when other teams double- and triple-team her.”
Mount Vernon (7-4-1) has three matches this week in town. Benton, Regina, and then Solon on Thursday, May 14, at Cornell College.
“We have five games left until regionals, and we need to figure out what we’re good at,” Knies said.
