Camp Tanager is celebrating it’s 100th Anniversary this year.
As part of that anniversary, mayor Tom Wieseler read a proclamation designating May through August as Camp Tanager 100th Anniversary Celebration Monday, May 4.
“WHEREAS, Camp Tanager was founded in 1926—originally known as Camp Good Health—to serve children with health and physical needs, and has since evolved to meet the changing needs of youth while maintaining its commitment to safe, meaningful camp experiences; and
“WHEREAS, Camp Tanager is located in Mount Vernon, and for 100 years has been a place where children and families from across the region have experienced recreation, connection, learning, and personal growth in an outdoor setting; and
“WHEREAS, today Camp Tanager serves more than 1,000 children annually through summer and year-round programming, including traditional camp experiences and specialized medical camps for children with conditions such as diabetes and hemophilia, ensuring access to camp for children who might otherwise be unable to attend; and
“WHEREAS, the continued success and longevity of Camp Tanager have been made possible through the dedication of staff, volunteers, supporters, and community partners who have invested in the camp and its mission for generations; and
WHEREAS, the year 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Camp Tanager, providing an opportunity to recognize its lasting impact on children, families, and the broader community, and to celebrate a century of service and care;
NOW, THEREFORE, l, Tom Wieseler, Mayor of the City of Mount Vernon, Iowa, do hereby proclaim the months of May-August 2026 as CAMP TANAGER 100TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION in the City of Mount Vernon, and encourage residents to join in recognizing and celebrating this important milestone.”
Mike Hinz and Mary Foreman from Camp Tanager were in attendance. They invited the community to put Saturday, Aug. 1, on their calendar, when Camp Tanager will host Summer Jam celebration to take part in many activities and celebrate the 100th anniversary.
Hinz also noted Camp Tanager has had connections to Mount Vernon, with members of the Mount Vernon Archery Club utilizing their facility for the past 12 years, and one of their counselors working with area schools for multiple years now.
