Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Theatre is proud to present The Laramie Project, a powerful and thought-provoking play by Moisés Kaufman and the Tectonic Theater Project. Performances will take place June 5–6 and June 12–13 at 7:30 p.m., with a Sunday matinee on June 7 at 2 p.m., at the First Street Community Center Uptown Theatre.
Directed by Grant Freeman, The Laramie Project was created from interviews conducted after the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard in Laramie, Wyoming. Through the voices of townspeople, friends, clergy, and journalists, the play examines grief, prejudice, compassion, and the power of community in the face of tragedy.
MVLCT’s talented ensemble cast brings this compelling story to life through a wide range of voices and perspectives. The cast includes Lynn Burgin, Genesis Hartle, Atlas Knox, Duane Larson, Mary Morgan-Blacharski, Libbie Randall, Alysun Shamburg, and Maura Wright, each helping to create the many individuals and viewpoints that make The Laramie Project such a moving and unforgettable experience.
“The Laramie Project is about a community that failed and how certain members of that community decided to stop failing. How we can rise from the ashes if we do it together,” says director Grant Freeman. “In that aspect, it is the most quintessential modern community theater show—built, designed, and performed by a community theater. It is a memory play; a play of remembrance. A story of who we once were and who we hope to never be again.”
Audience members are encouraged to reserve tickets early for what promises to be an unforgettable theatrical experience. Tickets go on sale May 1, 2026.
