Mount Vernon track went down Hwy. 1 to participate in the Denny Gruber Relays on Tuesday, April 21.
The Mustang boys placed fourth. Dawson Scheil and Benjamin Brinkmann led the way with a 1-2 finish in the 1,600.
“Dawson is a great senior leader,” Mount Vernon coach Ryan Whitman said. “He has set some lofty goals.”
Whitman was happy to see a lot of younger runner perform well.
“They stepped up and ran some good times,” he said.
The girls finished second as a team, while keeping their powder dry for Drake. Lucy Wischmeyer won the long jump, and Taylor Franck won the open 200.
Franck, out for the first time, is becoming a big help in sprint events.
“She is a huge addition for this team,” Mount Vernon coach Kory Swart said. “I’ve been wanting to see her on the track for a long time.”
Wischmeyer, who just missed out on jumping at Drake, won with a leap of 17 feet, 10.25 inches, which would have qualified her for Drake.
“A few days too late, but a huge jump for her, and one she can build off of,” Swart said.
The shuttle hurdle relay also had its best time of the year. Khloe Karminski, Cora Smith, Adrienne Ruhland and Kiersten Swart finished in 1:09.61, a step behind first-place Regina.
Caroline Rupe set a PR in the 400, finishing second in 1:02.51.
