Both Mount Vernon soccer teams enjoyed a big win over South Tama County on Thursday, April 16.
Their other match, against Solon on Tuesday, April 14, was rained out and postponed to May 14.
The girls beat South Tama, 10-0.
Coach Angie Knies said the win was more about the Mustangs clicking, than the Trojans clacking.
“We figured out what worked for us,” Knies said. “We were connecting on more passes, side to side, and got their defense rattled.”
Sophomore Isabelle Logue led the attack with three goals.
“I think she’s finding her groove,” Knies said. “She is finding what works for her.”
Senior Courtney Franck and sophomore Liliana Grosse each had two goals, and junior Timber Scholl and junior Miranda Sellner each had one.
“Our goal was to have a lot of goal-scorers this season, and now we’re doing that,” Knies said. “Everyone on the front line has gotten a goal this season.”
Mount Vernon (2-2, 2-1 WaMaC) got two assists from Franck, and one each for Rose Pisarik, Scholl, Miranda Sellner and Alaina Sellner.
Senior Aubrey Ford recorded the shutout in goal, making two saves.
Boys
The Mustang boys beat the Trojans, 6-0.
Senior Jaxon Anderson had a hat trick with three goals. Senior Issac Dausener added two goals, and sophomore Caleb Norton added the final goal.
Dausener and Anderson each had two assists, with one for Cash Luneckas.
“Jaxon can cause a lot of problems, and he bring that athleticism,” Mount Vernon coach Nathan Grosse said. “He has a strong desire to get goals, and create chances for other guys, too.”
The Mustangs came out firing early, getting a few goals, and were able to get some first-year players into the game in the second half.
“If you put away those early chance, it build your confidence and the belief we can put balls in the net,” Grosse said.
Zion Safo and Cooper Krob combined for the shutout in goal for Mount Vernon (3-1-1, 1-1-1 Wamac).
