In the world of college athletics, things can change in a hurry.
Mount Vernon grad Sydney Huber and the Evansville Purple Aces were feeling pretty good after making it to the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title game a month ago.
But then about a week later their coach, Robyn Scherr, decided to step away from coaching. And nine of the 13 Purple Aces decided to enter the transfer portal.
“One of the things I liked best about this place was my teammates,” Huber said Friday, April 17. “And when I heard the amount who were leaving, I decided that was my best decision, as well.”
After putting her name in the portal, and talking to a lot of programs, Huber decided to transfer to Murray State.
Fittingly, perhaps, given that they are the team that beat Evansville in the MVC title game (Huber had 15 points and hit 3-of-3 from the arc in that game March 15 in Coralville.)
The Racers return four starters from that team, and will try for their third straight MVC title in 2026-27.
“One of their main shooters from last year graduated,” Huber said. “I’m hoping to continue to grow my game and continue to get better.”
Huber was selected to the All-Freshman team in the MVC, averaging 8.5 points per game and shooting 35 percent from 3-point range. She played in 35 games and made 29 starts for the Purple Aces.
It was another chance for Huber to be recruited, and she said her phone blew up the first day the portal opened. She took several visits, but Murray State (Murray, Ky.) was the right fit.
“I honestly had no idea where I wanted to go at first,” Huber said. “But I fell in love with the team, coaches and program. I can’t wait to be part of it.
“I’m really glad to have my decision made. It relieves some stress and gives me more time to focus on school.”
Murray State (31-4) also added former Nebraska guard Claire Johnson out of the portal.
