Caring connections, strong foundations, and positive experiences play a vital role in developing healthy brains and building thriving communities. Each April, in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month, Linn County Community Partnerships for Protecting Children (CPPC) joins communities across the nation in encouraging neighbors, businesses, schools, friends, and families to work together to support children and families.
Throughout April, CPPC will host several activities designed to raise awareness and encourage community involvement. Planned events include coloring contests and community pinwheel plantings, which symbolize the importance of safe and happy childhoods.
Wellpoint will host a Day of Play Friday, April 24, from 5-7 p.m. at Cleveland Elementary School, 2200 First Ave. NW, Cedar Rapids. Families are invited to attend this free event featuring games and activities, a free meal (while supplies last), free pool passes for Cedar Rapids pools (while supplies last), and free vision and dental exams for children. The event will take place outside near the playground, with the school gym available if needed. Day of Play will be held rain or shine.
Community members are also encouraged to show their support for Child Abuse Prevention Month by planting pinwheels, displaying colored pinwheels in windows, supporting Project Porchlight by lighting their porch with a blue light bulb, and starting conversations about positive ways to support children and families.
Supportive relationships and strong social connections are key factors in promoting overall well-being and preventing child abuse and neglect. Communities that foster connection often experience lower crime rates, improved physical and mental health, and reduced costs associated with social challenges.
Child abuse prevention is a shared responsibility, and meaningful change happens through partnerships across the community.
