This season, after a game in Independence, a grade-school student came up to Mount Vernon senior Kellen Haverback and asked him if he was going to play basketball in college.
The Mustang standout had to disappoint his young fan. Nope. Football.
Haverback is pretty good at both. Last week he was named the WaMaC East Player of the Year.
“He had a great career,” Mount Vernon coach Derek Roberts said. “And he was selected academic all-state, which is the toughest team to be a part of. Only 20 players across all classes are selected.”
Haverback averaged 19.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 3.0 steals and 1.4 blocks per game. He had an assist to turnover ratio of 1.02.
He finished as the all-time steals leader at Mount Vernon, and his 64 steals this past season (the second-most in school history). He also ranks fourth all-time in 3-pointers and 10th in scoring, going over 1,000 career points this season.
Also on the WaMaC all-conference teams, juniors Seth and Luke Rushford were second-team picks for Mount Vernon.
Seth averaged 9.2 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, and Luke averaged 8.8 points and 3.3 rebounds. Seth made 28 3-pointers and Luke had 27.
“It is a credit to those players for the time and effort that they have put in,” Robert said. “Seth took on a larger role for us this year as more than just a shooter. He became versatile in scoring the ball. He also really stepped up his game defensively.
“Luke is just always super solid and does a lot for us defensively that doesn’t show up in the box scores … and also became one of the top 3-point shooters in our league.”
Juniors Stratton Ellyson and Maddox Thede earned WaMaC recognition.
Mount Vernon finished 14-6 overall, 11-5 in the WaMaC overall, and 5-5 in the WaMaC East.
