The Mount Vernon girls’ track team won the Class 3A title Thursday, March 12, and Friday, March 13, at the IATC Indoor Championships at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center in Ames.
The Mustangs won with 56 points. Mount Pleasant (44) and ADAM (41) followed.
Mount Vernon won four events, led by junior Evelyn Moeller, who won the 3,000 in 9 minutes, 39.26 seconds, and anchored the winning 4×800 relay, which also included Kiersten Swart, Madison Hoffert and Caroline Rupe.
“Evelyn beat the school record (in the 3,000) by over a minute,” Mount Vernon girls track coach Kory Swart said. “And she looked incredible doing it.”
Moeller was named the Outstanding Performer of the meet and qualified for the Drake Relays with her 3,000 time.
And the 4×800 relay was dominant. They beat the second-place team, Glenwood, by about 26 seconds.
“When you give the baton to Evelyn in the lead, you feel pretty good,” Swart said.
Kiersten Swart, who ran the first leg, also set a personal best in the 1,500, placing third.
And Moeller was probably competing for Outstanding Performer with her teammate, CaliAna Whitaker.
The senior won the 200 in 25.18 seconds and the 400 in 57.10 seconds.
She was also fifth in the 60 with a time of 7.92 seconds. She ran a 7.86 in the prelims to make the finals.
“She’s off to a great start,” Swart said. “To run those times right out of the gate is wonderful. She almost equaled her best times from last year in her first meet of the year, and at an indoor track. That’s a good sign.”
Lisbon
