The Mount Vernon School board tabled action on a resolution asking for 5 percent state supplemental aid and putting an income cap on education savings accounts and phasing those out over the next five years.
Board president Rick Elliott noted there was a lot of support in the community for the measure, and several other communities in the state had signed on to the measure.
Board member Tim Keegan said he was a no vote, stating school board need to be cautious and remain non-political, and the measure being sponsored by Citizens for Community Improvement (CCI) was a good chunk of his reason in saying no.
“Just some of my past experiences with CCI make me wary of supporting this,” Keegan said.
Board member Jason Clark also expressed reticence on any action.
“I would like more time to look into this further,” Clark said.
Clark also entertained those who are passionate about support of the matter to email him and other school board members.
Board member Maggie Hartzler recommended those who are disappointed that the board was tabling action continue to contact their representatives and legislators on the issue.
“Phone calls to your local representatives matter a whole lot as well,” Hartzler said.
All action on the resolution was tabled to the March school board meeting.
Team room update
Matt Thede said that the Team Room will be having an inspection on the electrical and heating ventilation and air conditioning portions of the project, and then instruction from Robison Construction on what can be completed on their own for the project.
“We’re still doing some fundraising for lockers and some of the intangibles,” Thede said. “We don’t know if we’ll have all of those in by the start of the next football season, but it will be usable by then.”
Thede said more work should be seen at the facility in the next month or so.
