If you are someone who visits the Children’s Room regularly, you will notice some changes.
These changes are based on how the collections in that room are used. Change can be hard, so let me walk you through how these changes were decided upon.
Ten years ago, DVDs were checked out regularly from the Children’s Room and were a high circulating item. Now, because people mostly use streaming services, the circulation of DVDs has plummeted. In contrast, we have a lot of very young patrons who enjoy board books. The circulation for that collection has skyrocketed and we had run out of room to expand those materials.
Our beginning reading books – those with a controlled vocabulary – are also very popular, but were also out of room to expand. In response to this information, we have flipped these collections around and each of them is in a new area that is clearly marked.
When we made these decisions for the Children’s Room, I thought about John Maxwell’s quote: “Change is inevitable. Growth is optional.” In the library world change is inevitable, but making these changes makes growth possible for our young patrons. Stop in and check out all the new board books and juvenile readers.
