The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Police Department’s training room will be named the Doug Shannon Training Room.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon Police chief Jason Blinks announced the dedication, stating that Shannon’s long career in law enforcement and vision for the building that now serves as home for the police department made this a fitting honor and recognition.
Blinks said Sgt. Willia Daubs had presented the idea to him earlier in the year, and Blinks couldn’t think of a better way to honor the long-time leader for the local police force than continuing to mentor, train and help officers develop skills they need in today’s policing.
“We’re five years since this building was determined to be the home of the joint police force,” Blinks said.
Shannon said that when he had joined the police department in 1990, it had been as a reserve officer and he worked his way up the ranks to chief.
“One of the things I always tasked myself when I was on patrol is buildings that would be suitable for the police department,” Shannon said. “This was one of those buildings that was just perfect.”
With the right timing, the pieces fell into place, and Shannon had the vision of what the building needed besides space for officers to fit for decades in the future.
One of those spaces was a space for training officers.
“It’s a space large enough to be used by both departments, as well as other agencies,” Shannon said. “We’ve utilized this space for other emergency management personnel, for critical incident debriefs and other education opportunities.”
Shannon said he was deeply honored and humbled to have this space bear his name in the future at the dedication event.
