Mount Vernon boys’ basketball enjoyed a two-win week, beating South Tama County on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 71-43, and winning a road trip at Vinton-Shellsburg on Thursday, Jan. 8, by a score of 58-55.
The Mustangs got out to a big lead against the Vikings, then hung on in the second half.
Tommy Rhomberg had a big blocked shot down the stretch and Kellen Haverback had a steal and two foul shots to help seal the win.
“We hung on with just enough,” Mount Vernon coach Derek Roberts said.
Haverback finished with 30 points, five rebounds and nine steals for Mount Vernon (8-1, 6-1 Wamac East).
Against STC, Haverback scored 27 points and had seven rebounds.
“I thought his teammates found him with the hot hand when he had it on Tuesday and first half Thursday,” Roberts said.
Seth Rushford added 10 points against STC. Maddox Thede had 13 points and Luke Rushford had eight assists.
Against V-S, Thede had 12 points.
