Lisbon boys’ wrestling had about as good of a final week before the holiday break as any team could have. The Lions went 5-0 in two midweek duals, and won the team title at Saturday, Dec. 20, at the Regina Invitational in Iowa City.
The Lions scored 196 points to edge Woodbury Central by one point in the team race. Lisbon is ranked No. 5 and Woodbury Central No. 3 in the IHSAA dual team rankings.
“We had our guys come together and wrestle their butts off,” Lisbon coach Aaron Helmrich said. “It was great to win the title against Woodbury Central.”
Lisbon had eight wrestlers in the finals. (A few weights were round robins due to low numbers.)
Kyler Happel (106), Cade Happel (126), Carter Gadberry (132) and Caleb Brown (175) won gold. Jack Gogel (113), Cael Stricker (120), Gavin Hove (138) and Jackson Knapp (150) took silver.
Cade Happel picked up career win No. 100 in the finals when he pinned Tacoma Thompson of MFL MarMac in 48 seconds.
“Cade is a young man who wrestles hard,” Helmrich said. “He goes to work every day and leads by example. It was good to celebrate him.”
Brown won gold for the second straight Saturday.
“He just keeps plugging away,” Helmrich said. “He’s beating the guys he should, and wrestling everyone very tough.”
Brown pinned all three opponents, including Maverick Joy of Woodbury Central in the finals.
Lisbon started its week by beating Colfax-Mingo (57-12), English Valleys (66-18) and Sigourney-Keota (43-30) on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at Sigourney.
