Mount Vernon junior Andrew Dix has something in common with Indiana Jones.
There is a theory that Indiana Jones had no impact on the plot of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” After all, the Nazis find the Ark, open the Ark, and die (spoilers) with or with the archeologist doing anything.
On Saturday, Dec. 13, at the 58th Mount Vernon Invitational, Dix won his finals match over Maxwell Azzaline of Davenport Assumption without scoring a point himself.
Trailing 1-0 going into the final period, Dix scored on a locked hands call (1 point) on Azzaline, then a full Nelson call (1 point) on Azzaline, and then Azzaline – knowing he needed a takedown to win — let Dix escape (1 point).
Dix won, 3-1.
“There’s more than one way to skin a cat,” Dix said.
Dix continued his early-season ascension as one of the top heavyweights in Class 2A. And he’s doing it as a 215-pounder who is wrestling up a weight.
“It is super different,” Dix said of wrestling heavyweight. “I’m giving up about 80 pounds most matches. You just have to find a way to make yourself heavy. There’s no way to match the size and strength of guys that weigh more than you.”
Dix typically is a step faster … if he can stay out of their headlocks.
“It is easier to be quicker than them,” he said. “If I hit a shot right away, I have to bring my hips around quick.”
Both Dix and senior Jaxon Anderson were ready to wrestle at 215 this fall, but Anderson won the wrestle-off and Dix moved up.
“He’s the hero of the story,” Anderson said. “He’s wrestling 85 pounds under weight and he’s still dominating. He’s doing a great job.”
Anderson also won a title Saturday — one of four Mustangs to do so — beating Dru Diaz of Davenport Assumption in the finals, 2-1.
“I was super undersized,” Anderson said. “So I tried to tire him out. He’s a big guy. I tried to get as much movement out of him as I could.”
“Jaxon is a little more patient than he was last year,” Mount Vernon coach Vance Light said. “And he’s not cutting weight, so he’s a happier guy.”
Freshman Avery Paustian (150) and top-ranked senior Mikey Ryan (157) also won titles as Mount Vernon finished second at its own tournament.
Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, the top-ranked team in 2A, won the team title with 237 points and six champions.
Mount Vernon had 200 points. Assumption was third with 145 points.
“They are really solid,” Light said of EBF. “We’ll see them sometime down the road.”
Senior Caleb Keegan (175) finished runner-up and senior Landon Grosse (165) and senior Caysen Curran (190) both finished fourth for the Mustangs.
Lisbon finished fifth at the 14-team event, and crowned one champion – sophomore Caleb Brown at 175 pounds.
“We had some ups and downs,” Lisbon coach Aaron Helmrich said. “We had some guys where they should have been, and some other guys got an early-season wake up.”
Brown pinned Keegan in the finals, building up a 10-4 lead after one period before turning him.
“I honestly thought I had him at the end of the first period,” Brown said.
Brown is a different wrestler than the one that went 2-and-BBQ at the 1A State Meet last year.
“Caleb just puts in a lot of work,” Helmrich said. “In the weight room, in the wrestling room, on the football field … Anything that Caleb wants to do, he puts his mind to it.
“This year he’s a little bit more level-headed; more control of his matches. Last year he was a little bit … freshman-y.”
The sophomore got an education at the Cliff Keen Invite last week, but followed it up with a title Saturday.
“I’m still an underclassman,” Brown said. “I’m putting up some good numbers against some good guys.”
The 1A Lions butted heads with bigger schools, and had some of their ranked wrestlers crash into EBF.
Cade Happel (126) finished runner-up, Jackson Knapp (144) was third, and Kyler Happel (106), Jack Gogel (113) and Cael Stricker (120) all finished fourth.
“We’ve got to learn to finish the day,” Helmrich said. “But we’ll be just fine.”
Mount Vernon had a Thursday, Dec. 11 dual at West Delaware postponed.
