The entire Lisbon boys’ wrestling lineup got a lot of action over two days at the Cliff Keen Independence Invitational.
The Lions finished seventh at the 33-team event. Lisbon was one of just three 1A programs at the massive event.
“Six or seven matches in two days is hard to get, and they do it right,” Lisbon Coach Aaron Helmrich said. “We enjoy going, and our team looked really good.”
Just getting on the award stand for a meet of this size is impressive. Jack Gogel led Lisbon by finishing second. He lost in the finals to Kohen Dietzenbach of Burlington Notre Dame.
“Jack is a hard-nosed 113-pounder and wrestles every single second he’s on the mat,” Helmrich said. “Saturday morning, he was on fire, and everything was clicking for him. But if you wrestle enough, you can get caught. (The final match) was 0-0 when he got caught.”
Cade Happel (126) finished fifth, Jackson Knapp (144) was sixth, and Carter Gadberry (132) was seventh. Cael Stricker (120) and Caleb Brown (175) each finished eighth.
“We like the competition,” Helmrich said. “You get a lot of matches in a short amount of time. There are no gimmies, just good wrestlers for two days straight.”
Earlier in the week, Lisbon won a pair of duals in Durant.
On Tuesday, Dec. 2, the Lions bat the Wildcats 54-22, and the Lone Tree Lions 76-6.
“Some of our new pieces looked pretty good that night,” Helmrich said.
The coach pointed out junior Ryan Nevins (190) was losing his match against Durant’s Tanner Tobias when he found a way to turn him and get a third-period pin.
“That was a big win for a first-year varsity starter,” Helmrich said.
