Mount Vernon sophomore wrestler Kate Martin started the season on fire.
Martin went 7-0 during the first week, winning titles at the South Tama Invitational on Thursday, Nov. 20, and at the Wilton Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 22.
She pinned all seven opponents, topping Jayva Gomez of South Tama County in the finals at South Tama, and decking Austyn Sexton of Mid-Prairie at Wilton.
“She has definitely taken things up a notch,” Mount Vernon Coach Trevor Trende said. “After the way she finished last season and all the work she put in over the summer, we knew she would come in on a mission, and she’ showing exactly that.”
The rest of the Mustangs had mixed amounts of success the opening week. At South Tama, Josie Panos (235) was runner-up and Kaylee Kintzel (155) finished third.
At Wilton, Alexi Glaza (130) and Kintzel (155) earned silver, and Panos (285) took bronze.
“Overall, the team performed well,” Trende said. “Lexi Glaza put together a solid performance at Wilton, and Kaylee Kintzel and Josie Panos have been wrestling extremely well.”
The Mustangs lineup will also get a boost when Gracie Pinckney, Addi Whisner and Kiersten Swart return in the coming weeks.
