The Mustangs established their credentials as one of the top programs in 1A last year, finishing runner-up at the state meet.
After saying goodbye to the program’s only state champion, two-time winner Libby Dix, Mount Vernon will see if it can continue to be a contender.
“We’re super excited,” coach Trevor Trende said. “Losing a leader like Libby will definitely be a challenge, but with five seniors, I know we’re in good hands.
“The goals remain the same. We’re looking to bring home another trophy.”
The core is solid. Senior Kiersten Swart is a three-time state qualifier, and was state runner-up last winter. Sophomore Kate Martin was fourth at state, senior Addi Whisner and senior Grace Pinckney were both fifth. Sophomore Kaylee Kintzel also qualified for state, and senior Carly Elliott finished third at regionals, just missing a state trip.
“They’ve been to state, and they’ve had success,” Trende said. “All of them didn’t get exactly what they’d like. They want to finish on top of the podium. It creates a hunger and drive to get better.”
On the downside, the Mustangs overall numbers have flattened out a little bit, and the team may struggle to fill every weight in their dual lineup.
“We’re small, but mighty,” Trende said. “We’ll have a few holes. Instead of wrestlers getting a decision, now maybe they need to go out and get a fall. We’ll make do with what we have.”
Mount Vernon does have some talented freshmen, including Lew Stullmukes, Channing Kuker, Josie Hocker, and Audrey Dix … the younger sister of Libby, who is now at Iowa.
“We all know she’s not Libby,” Trende said. “But we’re excited to see what she can do.”
