Crossing signage has been approved for the intersection of First Avenue and A Avenue in Mount Vernon.
City administrator Chris Nosbisch said that the intersection will have solar powered lighted crossing signs to garner attention to the crossing in Mount Vernon.
“We had proposed to have a four way stop intersection at that corner, but are looking to try this first to see if the issue improves,” Nosbisch said.
Council member Craig Engel asked if it would be possible to move the sign from the intersection near the Sculpture Art Trail to help draw attention to the crossing as well.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon Police chief Jason Blinks said that would not be a good location for a similar signage, as there is some heavy truck traffic at the intersection and corners which may run into the sign on occasion.
The signs will be used to indicate the pedestrian crossing, especially in the before and after school timeframes, as this portion of sidewalks is also tied to the trail system that connects the community to area schools.
“There’s also 20 some businesses and the First Street Community Center near this intersection,” council member Stephanie West noted.
The cost for the lighted signs is roughly $7,047 and will be provided by Nelson Electric.
