It was a familiar matchup. Lisbon volleyball made the Tri-Rivers Tournament title game for the sixth straight season.
And for the fifth time in six years, they matched up with Springville (23-12).
The 10th-ranked (1A) Orioles got the best of the Lions this year, winning 25-14, 20-25, 15-12, on Thursday, Oct. 16, at Edgewood-Colesburg High School.
“The third set was back and forth, and we held a 12-11 lead, but ultimately, Springville was able to come out on top,” Lisbon Coach Lance Kamaus said. “The effort of our kids was phenomenal all night long.”
Springville senior Rowan Jacobi was hard to slow down. The Oriole hitter and D-1 basketball recruit, had 20 kills and hit at a .486 efficiency in the title match.
The Lions hit just .188 as a team, led by Mykala Luzum-Selmon with 11 kills. Kamryn Kahl had five kills, Jordin McFarlane had four and Alexa Roos and Kaitlyn Silver each added three.
Luzum-Selmon and Shea Benhart each had 12 digs to lead the defense.
Lisbon (33-9) advanced to the championship by first winning its pool on Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the Lions’ Den. The Lions beat Bellevue Marquette 21-7, 21-12, and Starmont 21-13, 21-11.
Thursday at Ed-Co, Lisbon opened by beating Prince of Peace 25-15, 23-25, 15-9, and then Edgewood-Colesburg 25-18, 25-19, to set up the final.
“Prince of Peace gave us a very tough match, and pushed us to our limits,” Kamaus said. “Their height (3 player over 6-foot-1) tends to give us issues at times.”
Lisbon opened Class 2A Region 6 play on Wednesday, Oct. 22, against West Branch (18-17). Win, and they play Monday, Oct. 27 at No. 11 Wapsie Valley (21-17). The top half of the regional includes No. 6 Union (35-12).
“The match against West Branch will be a challenge,” Kamaus said. “They are a talented, well-coached team, and we will need to play our best to come out on top.”
Lisbon topped the Bears in the Lisbon Invitational back on Sept. 20, 15-21, 21-19, 16-14. The Lions are 2-2 against River Valley teams this fall.
