The fourth annual Hwy. 1 Marching Band Classic was held Tuesday, Oct. 14, at Lisbon High School.
Lisbon marching band director Joseph Arch said there was some slight concern with the slow rainfall earlier Tuesday if the event was to be held.
“I was out there in the afternoon testing the drainage on the field and if it would still be okay,” Arch said. “It was.”
Bands performing included Lisbon, Solon, Mount Vernon and Anamosa.
Anamosa’s theme was on Medusa and Greek Mythology, featuring a confrontation between Perseus and the gorgon winding between the movements of the marching band.
Mount Vernon’s theme this year was Reminisce, which featured the music of Ed Sheerhan and tracks from “dear Evan Hansen,” among others.
Solon’s theme this year was inspired by the whimsy of Cirque du Soleil.
Lisbon’s theme this year was Elton John, featuring many songs from the singer.
The funds raised from concession sales and admission benefit the Lisbon Band.
The Mount Vernon Marching Mustangs earned their 11th straight Division I rating at state at Kingston Stadium Saturday, Oct. 11, with a score of 92.6 out of 100.
The band also placed first in Class 3A at the Muscatine Invite Saturday, Oct. 11, with a score of 85.9, picking up accolades of best drum majors, best percussion and best color guard. The band was second place in all 20 bands in competition at the Muscatine event.
Lisbon also picked up their sixth straight Division I performance at Kingston Stadium, setting a new school record for consecutive Division I ratings for the marching band.
