Lisbon volleyball put the cherry on top of their Tri-Rivers sundae last week.
Not only did the Lions clinch their ninth Tri-Rivers East title in a row by beating North Cedar 25-21, 17-25, 25-13, 25-17, on Tuesday, Oct. 7, they won their 50th straight Tri-Rivers match on Thursday, Oct. 9, by defeating Easton Valley, 25-12, 25-11, 25-18, on Senior Night.
“We’re well aware (of the streak),” senior Kamryn Kahl said. “For the seniors, it is a pretty cool experience, and something we always strive for.
“But at the end of the day, we’re going to play our game, and we’re having fun with it.”
Against the Knights, the Lions came out with sparkly, oversized sunglasses, courtesy of senior Josie Nost. Despite both teams being undefeated in conference play, Lisbon never gets too serious.
“We knew whoever won this match, would win the title,” Lisbon coach Lance Kamaus said. “We don’t dwell on that too much … but you don’t want to be the group that loses.
“We did come out a little bit amped up that first set.”
It led to some serving errors and attack errors early, and North Cedar led 14-10 at one point. But tied at 21-21, Kahl smacked a kill off the block, the Knights hit one into the net, Emersyn Reiter put down a free ball, and Shea Benhart finished it with an ace, 25-21.
North Cedar (18-9, 5-2) bounced back and controlled the second set. With six-foot-one freshman Caylee Jensen delivering four kills.
“They have some tall girls,” Kahl said. “But we just tried to focus on our side of the net.”
Early in the third set, the Knights were up 10-8 when things started to turn.
And down the stretch, senior Mykala Luzum-Selmon caught fire. During a 9-0 run to close out the set, Luzum-Selmon had four kills and a stuff block. (And Nost had three ace serves.) The final kill was hit through the North Cedar block.
“It has got to be demoralizing at times,” Kamaus said. “There were times the block was set up perfectly by them, and we hit through it.”
Luzum-Selmon did that a lot, and so did Kahl. They finished with 18 kills and 11, respectively.
“Kam has done a phenomenal job the last two years of hitting off the block,” Kamaus said. “She adjusts her swing.”
“When you hit it that hard, there’s only so much you can do with it,” Kahl said.
Riding the momentum, the Lions built a 14-9 lead in the fourth set, and then finished the match with a 6-1 run.
They followed that up two days later with a relatively easy one against the River Hawks, who are just 1-23.
Luzum-Selmon had 14 kills and Kahl added seven against Easton Valley. As a team, Lisbon had a kill efficiency of .388.
Lisbon ended the week going 2-2 at the Don Bosco Invitational. The Lions beat West Central (21-8, 21-10) and AGWSR (21-11, 21-12) and lost to Don Bosco (21-12, 21-18) and Hudson (25-20, 25-14).
The Lions (29-8) also learned of their postseason draw. They host West Branch (15-14) on Wednesday, Oct. 22. Win that, and they must travel to No. 11 Wapsie Valley (21-13) on Oct. 27. The regional final is Oct. 29, with No. 6 Union Community (30-7) the most likely team to come out of the other half of the Class 2A Region 6 bracket.
Lisbon beat West Branch earlier this season in the Lions’ Den during a home tournament, 15-21, 21-19, 16-14.
Overall, the Lions are 2-2 against River Valley teams. Lisbon is slated to jump to that conference next fall, ending any Tri-Rivers streaks.
