Mount Vernon’s trick or treat hours are likely to remain on Friday, Oct. 31.
Community members had voiced points on Mandy Moellering’s Facebook wall in splits between the three options.
City administrator Chris Nosbisch said the one email city staff did receive noted a request not to move the hours to Thursday, Oct. 30.
Nosbisch said again the reason the city was looking at this was due to safety concerns with increased traffic at the Stonebrook neighborhood might see due to trick-or-treating and the home football game.
“If we do keep Halloween on Friday evening, there will likely be more law enforcement presence in the areas where we expect higher traffic for everyone’s safety,” Nosbisch said.
Others on social media had noted issues with Saturday’s hours and the Chili Cook-Off event happening that hour.
“We do know that festival tends to need more officers that would need to be called into service,” Nosbisch said.
Activities director Matt Thede and superintendent Matt Leeman had said that early playoff game would likely not draw the same crowd a later playoff game will.
The council is slated to make a final decision at the Oct. 6 council meeting.
LBC windows facing warranty issues
Several windows at the Lester Buresh Family Community Wellness Center are experiencing opacity issues.
City administrator Chris Nosbisch and parks and recreation director Matt Siders met with a glass contractor Monday, Sept. 15.
Nosbisch said the center has had 11 different panels that have lost some of their opacity.
“The manufacturer is standing behind their warranty for the products,” Nosbisch said.
The windows are under contract for the next five years, so if the city were to need to replace them, the windows themselves would not be a part of the cost. Replacing the damaged panes, however, will cost the city because of how some of the panes are installed in the building. The glass itself is under warranty. “I’m just glad we’re realizing this now,” said council member Stephanie West.
Siders said the first failure wasn’t spotted until earlier this year. Shortly after the first one was spotted, similar issues arose in other windows until the city was up to 11 total. Some of the windows impacted are structural windows for the building.
