Design work approved for Hwy. 1 project
The city also approved the design work for the repaving portion of Hwy. 1 the Iowa Department of Transportation will be completing in the coming years.
During discussion, city administrator Chris Nosbisch was asked if the project will be split in two phases, a north and south portion of the project.
“We won’t know until the project is bid,” Nosbisch said. “There are some companies who are large enough they could do both phases at once.”
Nosbisch said while the city will not be facing a lot of cost on the project, he anticipates at least $1 million in expenses dealing with any issues to water or sewer mains that need to be addressed.
“If it ends up costing the city less than $1 million, I’ll be happy,” Nosbisch said.
New flower baskets approved for MV
The city also approved purchasing planters for flowers for hanging flower baskets. The current flower baskets require city staff to water them every day, which becomes a full time task for city staff during the summer.
The new water baskets will allow plants to be watered two to three times a week instead.
Fifty baskets amounted to a $10,000 expense for the city, and will be installed next summer.
The watering of flowers in uptown was a task and expense that Community Development Group paid for that the city took over.
Childcare Solutions update
Council member Craig Engel said that the Sills family is open to any childcare facility that may move into the space formerly occupied by Lisbon Early Childcare Center West in the budget Blinds location.
Champions, when they took over childcare for Lisbon in July, closed that location to have one director of childcare operations in Lisbon. All children at that facility were moved to the LECC space at Lisbon Schools. The commission continues to meet on childcare issues in Mount Vernon and Lisbon.
