Another year, another beautiful Sauerkraut Days and 150th anniversary for the community of Lisbon.
This past week, there were activities on every night of the week for Lisbon’s Sesquicentennial including Cooking with Laura Ingalls Wilder, a poker UTV run, Take Down Wrestling tournament, the traditional ice cream social and fireworks, Sauerkraut Days activities on Friday and Saturday, and then the sealing of a time capsule for the next 50 years.
It was the first year for a big change for Lisbon Sauerkraut Days, and we can say that utilizing the Lisbon Sports Complex to host the ice cream social and fireworks on Thursday, Aug. 14, was a great move.
It’s not that Lisbon City Park wasn’t a great location in the past, don’t get us wrong. But from a public safety standpoint, having the events at a less highly trafficked area made things safer. There was plenty of room for the Celebrate Community event to have its many booths and not feel cramped or not an attraction at the event. The inflatables, line for ice cream and desserts and music from Laurie Maher added to the night.
The only minor quibbles had to do when it came for the fireworks at dusk, and people deciding to leave parking spaces at those times and turning on car headlights to those trying to watch the bombs bursting in air being blinded by another light source at that time… That probably happened at Lisbon City Park as well.
We want to thank the members and volunteers who helped make the Lisbon Sauerkraut Days and Sesquicentennial events a reality this week, bridging the past history of the community of Lisbon with what we expect currently. It was a wonderful week of events to look forward to.
