The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Community Theatre is turning up the volume this summer with a fresh, high-energy production of Jesus Christ Superstar, opening July 18 at the Uptown Theatre inside the First Street Community Center. Performances run over three weekends: July 18–20, July 25–27, and August 1–3.
Directed by Courtenay Baker, a MVLCT board member, this year’s show celebrates the theater’s 45th anniversary season.
Baker’s modern vision sets the story in the present day, highlighting the pressures of fame and influence through elements like social media.
“It’s not set in biblical times,” Baker said. “We’re exploring how fame affects someone and the people around them using current themes.”
The story, told entirely through song, explores the personal relationships and struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, his followers, and the Roman Empire. The rock opera features iconic numbers like “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and “Gethsemane.” Rehearsals began the day after Memorial Day, with cast and crew meeting Sunday through Thursday evenings to prepare.
“The collaboration is my favorite part. I enjoy watching creative people come together to build something meaningful,” Baker said.
This year’s cast features several newcomers, including Sam Nester from Iowa City, who plays Jesus. A longtime fan of the original musical, Nester said the production has pushed him both artistically and physically.
“We’re constantly moving, singing, and refining scenes. But it’s worth it. This show really captures what community theater is all about,” Nester said.
Nester added that being part of the summer cast has also been a great way to stay connected.
“You meet people from around the area. It’s been a blast working with such a passionate group.”
Cal Loan, from Cedar Rapids, plays an apostle in her first MVLCT production.
“I found out about auditions the day before,” she said. “Everyone’s been so welcoming—I’ve never felt like an outsider.”
Loan described the atmosphere as one of the best she’s experienced in local theater, adding, “It’s supportive, positive, and a show everyone can come enjoy.” Whether you’re a longtime fan of the show or discovering it for the first time, don’t miss this chance to see local talent shine on stage in this exciting community production.
