Mount Vernon girls’ soccer closed WaMaC play with a 1-0 win over Benton Community on Tuesday, May 13, in Van Horne. The Mustangs then closed the regular season with a non-conference loss at Iowa City Regina, 3-1.
Against the Bobcats, Izzy Logue scored the winning goal.
“It was her first game back after having a huge concussion,” Mount Vernon Coach Angie Knies said. “It was a big play for us because she gained confidence and the girls felt more confident having her back.”
Mount Vernon (7-5-3) hosts Clinton (2-11-1) in a Class 2A regional quarterfinal on Friday, May 23.
“We are hungry and excited,” Knies said.
Boys
The Mustang boys’ soccer team closed with a 0-0 tie against Benton Community on Tuesday, May 13.
“We had some fatigued legs,” Mount Vernon coach Nathan Grosse said. “It was four matches in eight days.
For us to find a way to keep a clean sheet, create some solid chances and end the regular season with a strong effort felt pretty positive.”
While the Mustangs have had a number of draws, they have only lost one match over their last 10. And of the 10, seven have been shutouts.
“That speaks to the play of our keeper Zion Safo, and our backline and our team as a whole,” Grosse said. “We take a lot of pride in defending, and being hard to score on, and makes us a tough team to play.”
Mount Vernon (6-4-5) begins Class 3A substate play at home against Fort Madison (8-6-1) on Tuesday, May 27. It is a long layoff for the Mustangs.
“A horribly long gap,” Grosse said. Adding they added a scrimmage against Mount Pleasant this week.
