Community Band practices
The Mount Vernon Community Band will begin practices Tuesday, May 27, at 7 p.m. at the Mount Vernon
Middle School Band Room. Practices will continue on Mondays from then on, with performances at the Memorial Park Gazebo for Tuneful Tuesday concerts at 7:30 p.m. through the month of June. Director Elise Rodenberg said the group is open to any area musicians eighth grade or older.
“We’re also planning to end the season this year with a jazz band again, which was very popular last season,” Rodenberg said.
Another piece Rodenberg is excited for this season is Henry Fillmore’s Lightning Fingers, which will feature Dr. Joe Dieker on the clarinet.
“We also hope to have other featured soloists and groups this summer,” Rodenberg said.
School supply distribution sign-up
Sign-up has begun for Southeast Linn Community Center’s annual School Supply Distribution. Free supplies and backpacks are available to Lisbon and Mount Vernon students, as well as students who attend homeschool or online school in those communities.
Pre-registration is required at selinn.org or by calling 319-455-2844. Those who register by Friday, May 30 will be entered into a drawing for a gift card. Final registration deadline is Wednesday, July 9. Distribution will be on Friday, Aug. 8, from 4-6 p.m. at the Lester Buresh Center in Mount Vernon. Community members interested in supporting this event can provide a financial donation, = contribute new supplies, or volunteer.

Learn with the League Event
The Mount Vernon Lisbon Unit of the League of Women Voters of Linn County will be hosting a “Learn with the League” event Wednesday, May 28, at Mount Vernon City Hall from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The topic will be Mental Health Needs and Resources in Small Town and Rural Iowa.
The speaker will be Aubrey McEnroe. McEnroe is a PhD candidate at the University of Iowa. She is passion- ate about mental health care and accessible services in rural and small town Iowa.
“Mental health care should not be a luxury,” she says. “It should be a fundamental right.”
After graduation McEnroe will return to her hometown of Algona to farm with her father and establish a mental health practice.
