The 12U boys’ soccer team from Mount Vernon-Lisbon dominated two regional tournaments this summer, carting off championship trophies in the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Cedar Rapids and Dubuque regions.
During the June 3-5 weekend, the boys won all four games in the AYSO Region 1112 tournament (Cedar Rapids/Marion) on their way to claiming the championship. The MVL team outscored their opponents 26-1 over the four matches, with three shutouts.
The 12U boys then traveled to the AYSO Region 419 co-ed tournament in Dubuque on June 25-26. The Mount Vernon-Lisbon team – with four female players added to the roster – handily won its first two matches and tied its third match to advance to the championship. In the final, the co-ed team beat the squad that it previously tied, 3-1, to win the tournament. Overall, the Mount Vernon-Lisbon team outscored its opponents, 18-3.
The 12U teams were coached by Richard Lewis, who also coached the AYSO 14U boys’ team and the Mount Vernon-Lisbon middle-school soccer team last season.
