About Us
The Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun is a weekly print publication based in Mount Vernon, Iowa, that has served the communities of Lisbon, Mount Vernon, and surrounding areas in varying publication titles since 1869. The Sun is published on Thursdays and delivered 51 weeks per year (except the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day).
With a newly relaunched website, the Sun offers local news and features reporting on issues affecting the areas of Mount Vernon, Lisbon, Martelle, Bertram, Mechanicsville, and Morley, and areas of rural Linn, Jones, Johnson and portions of Cedar County.
The Sun’s roots date back to 1869. The names the newspaper has been known as over the years include the Mount Vernon Hawk-Eye (1869-1922), The Lisbon Herald (1895-1922), the Mount Vernon Hawkeye Record and Lisbon Herald (1925-1974), and finally, the combined Mount Vernon-Lisbon Sun (since 1975).
The Sun has been owned since February 2024 by Student Publications, Inc., the Iowa City-based non-profit corporation that owns and publishes The Daily Iowan (the student newspaper at the University of Iowa) and the Solon Economist.
