LHS Service Award – Dean Mallie, Class of 1975
The LHS Service Award is given to alumni for specific and meritorious service to any not-for-profit organization or for military service. Service must be for a non-compensated capacity for non-profit organization nominees, or for a full-time past or present member of the U.S. Military. The 2025 Inductee is Dean Mallie, Class of 1975.
Mallie has been directly involved with the reorganization and revitalization of the Lisbon Alumni Association (the “LAA”) since 2016 and has served as the organization’s President since then. Among Mallie’s accomplishments serving as the LAA’s President included coordination and finalization of the information needed to obtain federal non-profit organization status for the LAA in 2019.
Mallie has donated countless hours of his time coordinating the activities of the LAA including researching, gathering history and database contact information for the completion of the LAA’s annual newsletter. Mallie also served as the Chairman of the Alumni Association Hall of Fame selection committee through 2024.
In addition to Mallie’s 10 years of tireless dedication to the Lisbon Alumni Association, he also previously served 10 years on the Lisbon Community School board of directors, during which time included two of the school’s major building projects.
LHS Achievement Award – Roger DeYoung, former band director
The LHS Achievement Award is given to alumni or faculty who have earned recognition for their achievements and contributions in their professional life and have demonstrated a high level of achievement in their field and make/have made significant contributions in that field. The 2025 Inductee is Roger DeYoung, former band director at Lisbon.
DeYoung served as the head band director for 29 years and grew the Lisbon program to levels previously unknown. At the peak of the growth, shy of 50 percent of all high school students were in the band program. He was the director for the bands in grades five through twelve and maintained the Concert and Jazz Band programs as well as adding or growing the Marching Band, Pep Band, Pit Band, and Parade Band. As well, Mr. DeYoung committed to providing individual lessons to all musicians during the school year and offered a yearly summer lesson program. His teaching touched all of Lisbon through concerts, halftime performances, pregame renditions of the National Anthem, background scores for LHS musicals, or marching in the Memorial Day parade. For years, his groups were a part of most everything “Lisbon.”
DeYoung directed the first Lisbon Band to perform at the Iowa Bandmaster Association. His led groups also qualified for the Iowa Jazz Championships yearly from 2005-2012. His concert groups routinely earned Division One ratings as did his variety of solo and ensemble groups. While comprehensive records from the early 1980s are incomplete, DeYoung’s musicians recorded more than 300 Division 1 ratings in solo and ensemble contests during his tenure at Lisbon HS.
DeYoung is universally respected at the local and state level. He has been honored by the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association as the recipient of the Sehmann Award – given to directors who both serve the association as well as produce quality band programs. He has also been honored by the Iowa Bandmasters Association as recipient of the Karl King Award – given to those who have “… contributed immeasurably to the school band movement” and have made “significant contributions to the IBA organization.” Roger has instructed numerous students who have gone on to play at the collegiate level, the professional level and who are current band directors across the US.
Professionally, DeYoung is a member of the Iowa Bandmasters Association and the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association. He continues to be involved in public school music education serving as a mentor to new directors, as a guest clinician and as a judge at the State level.
LHS Community Impact Award – Iris Cook, former LECCEC director
The LHS Community Impact Award is given to alumni or faculty and staff members who should be recognized for their service contributions to the Lisbon community in any capacity and service for any reason. The 2025 Inductee is Iris Cook, founding member and director of the Lisbon Early Childhood Care and Education Center.
Cook spent her career teaching and caring for children. She headed up the LECCEC Development Committee back in 1990-1991. The establishment of a daycare and learning center within Lisbon Schools was her idea and was brought to fruition by Cook and then superintendent David Bradley’s efforts. Fund raising for the playground and air conditioning in the former shop space under the old gym was chaired by Cathy Jordan. A plan for remodeling the original shop area was created and accomplished. The School Board approved the idea and plans in early 1991. The Center opened in August 1991. Among Iris’s accomplishments with the LECCED included:
• Cook served as Director of the Lisbon Early Childhood Care and Education Center (LECCEC) from 1991-2004.
• Cook was responsible for the development and enhancements of the LECCED programs including regular doses of safety lessons. In the first five years of operation there were only two medical situations. One child needed stitches from a playground injury, while another child received minor injuries from a water fountain accident.
• In the LECCEC, every moment of the day was a learning opportunity which included no toys that would encourage aggressive behavior. Even winter provided play learning as the children shoveled and moved snow from one side of the play area to another.
• Cook also developed and coordinated a new before and after school care program in 2005 for older school aged children.
• The Center has touched the lives of many families within the Lisbon School community, serving multiple generations of children!
• While the center is known today as LECC, its legacy and humble beginnings live on.
LHS Athletics Award – Lori Siggins McMahon, Class of 1981
The LHS Athletics Award is given to alumni with exceptional accomplishments in athletics while attending LHS. Statistical records and awards, All-Conference award(s), All-State award(s), and/or State Championships earned are all considered. The 2025 Inductee is Lori Siggins McMahon, Class of 1981.
• During her time at LHS, McMahon played softball, track and basketball. Honors and records she received and achieved during her career include:
• Softball All State Honor – Fifth Team All State 1981. Note that at that time there was only one overall All State Team for all classes.
• Lisbon High School Softball All-Time Career Records based on standings through the 2024 Season include:
• Homeruns – First with 26.
• Batting Average – Seventh with a .406 Average
• RBI’s – 12th with 138.
• It should be noted that during McMahon’s high school career fewer games were played during a season as compared to the number of games per season in more recent years.
• Buena Vista College – Inducted into their Softball Hall of Fame.
• Lisbon High School Track Record – Through the 2025 season, McMahon still holds the record for the shot put with a throw of 38 feet, 4-1/2 inches which she set during the 1980 season.
The Lisbon Alumni Association encourage all community members to consider nominating someone you know that deserves to be in one of the five categories of recognition. You can find the nomination form on the Alumni Association page on the Lisbon School website, or by emailing us at [email protected].
