No. 7 Lisbon softball dropped a pair of games to Davenport West on Friday, July 5, at Bunting Field.
But the Lions were just happy to get some games in, after rain wiped out most of the week. Davenport West won, 7-1 and 9-8.
“It was a big school and a good team,” Lisbon coach Abby Shultz said. “Afterwards we talked about how majoring in the small details will allow us to be successful. But when those details get away from us, winning turns into a bigger task than we need it to be.”
In the first game, Lisbon had five hits, including a solo home run by Sarah Dietsch. Pitcher Kyla Kahl was peppered for 11 hits and three earned runs, despite striking out nine.
Lisbon jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the second game, but West rallied.
Addi Petersen took the pitching loss, giving up five hits and eight walks. Lisbon had 11 hits on offense, including a home run and a double from Brianna Turkington. Petersen also hit a double. Kamryn Kahl, Dietsch and Alexa Roos each had two singles.
The Lions added a single game against North Linn on Monday, July 8, in Coggin. The two teams already played a Tri-Rivers doubleheader back on May 28 in Lisbon, with the Lynx winning 5-4 and 13-4.
But it should help the Lions shake off any rust before the playoffs.
“We wanted some good competition, a good test going into Wednesday,” Shultz said.
The Class 2A playoffs start Wednesday, July 10, against either Waterloo Columbus (1-21) or Denver (13-17) at Bunting Field.
“We’ve been working on our fundamentals and fine-tuning our craft,” Shultz said. “We have all the tools, now we just have to open up our toolbox.”
Win Wednesday, and the Lions (24-9) host either Jesup (21-8) or Maquoketa Valley (16-13) on Friday, July 12. The regional final is Monday, July 15.
