Perreault third at Folkstyle Nationals
Klayten Perreault placed third in the 106-pound division in the USA Wrestling Junior Folkstyle Nationals this weekend at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls.
The undefeated state champion senior from Mount Vernon had to battle back after losing his opening match to Braydon Pacheco of Garden City High School by fall in 1:06.
He won by major decision, 10-1, over Bobby Rutkoff of Elevate Wrestling Club. Then won an 8-4 decision over Michael Kowalski of Empire Wrestling Club.
Perrault beat Eli Schultz of Pinnacle Wrestling Club by decision 9-6, then topped Zachary Siatka of NG Bombers Wrestling Club in the third-place match, 5-0.
Mount Vernon sophomore Will Goodlove went 0-2 and did not place at 165 pounds. He lost his first match by technical fall, 15-0 to Bradlee Farrer of Utah. Goodlove then lost to Andrew Servais of Pulaski Wrestling by fall, in 4:23.
In the 16u portion of the event, Mount Vernon freshman Nolan Mercer (120) and sophomore Jaxon Anderson (175) competed.
Mercer lost to Colin Strayer of Regional Wrestling Academy, 19-4, then beat Kaleb Gray of Iowa by fall in 53 seconds in the consolations, before losing to Luke Cline of Missouri by pin (1:00).
Anderson lost to Broedy Hendricks of Team Valley Wrestling Club by fall, 3:48. He then lost to Maximus Purdy of Assumption Elite Wrestling Club, 5-3 in SV-1.
Kutcher wins Big Ten title with Illinois
Former Mustang Keaton Kutcher is part of the Illinois basketball team that won the Big Ten Tournament on Sunday in Minneapolis.
Kutcher transferred to Illinois after two years at South Dakota, where he played in 25 games and scored 63 points. He is redshirting this season with the Illini and has two years of eligibility remaining.
Simpson, Kutcher selected for Senior Shootout
Mount Vernon seniors Peyton Simpson and Jackson Kutcher were picked to play in the Wamac Senior Shootout, held Monday at Benton Community.
Mustang girls basketball coach Nate Sanderson and his staff led Team Wapsi.
Simpson averaged 9.0 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for the state-qualifying Mustangs this winter.
Kutcher averaged a team-high 16.1 points per game. He made a team-high 39 3-pointers.
