It’s been one of those percolating editorials that keeps getting hammered home every week this winter. Well, every week over the past school year, if we’re honest.
We truly live in a special community, full of kids excelling in so many areas.
We had not one but two front pages devoted to wrestling champions in the month of February, with Libby Dix’s championship win for the girls wrestling and Klayten Perreault for the boys wrestling for Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon boys team were also runner-ups at the state tournament, the highest the team has ever fared for Mount Vernon High School in the traditional tournament.
That’s on top of the girls basketball punching their ticket to the state basketball tournament this week, and the Mount Vernon boys in contention as well.
On the music side, we have both jazz choirs and jazz bands at Mount Vernon earning Division I ratings at state competitions. Lisbon hosted aa wonderful Java Jazz and festival of bands performances and opportunities.
We’ve had our robotics team again advancing to state competition at Mount Vernon. Lisbon had five groups or individuals advance to the National Business Professionals of America event in Chicago, Ill., this spring.
On the speech front, five groups advanced to All-State for Mount Vernon and they recently took home the WaMaC East championship trophy. They hosted the district individual speech competition this weekend, giving everyone in the area a chance to see the multiple spectrums of speech categories in our area. Lisbon has had several groups advance to state competitions and fare well at contests as well.
There’s honor bands and choirs for both schools that have had area youth performing. Exceptional junior high programs that have had undefeated seasons.
Every week there’s always one or more group in this area that is celebrating another accomplishment or goal.
