Seniors Rachael Adewusi and Ani’ja Simmons netted 10 points apiece Saturday as Cornell’s women’s basketball team closed the season with a 67-40 loss to Midwest Conference runner-up Knox at Memorial Gym.
Adewusi had a strong outing in her final collegiate contest, posting six rebounds and three blocked shots to go with her double-digit points. Simmons shot 5-of-11 from the field and grabbed five rebounds.
Ten Rams scored in the game, including Mia Murray with five points off the bench.
Cornell kept pace with the Prairie Fire early and trailed 29-25 at the half. Knox closed the third period on a 14-4 run, extending its lead to 49-35. The Prairie Fire pulled away in the fourth, limiting the Rams to two made field goals.
The Rams came away with 10 steals, including three from Heidi Jorgensen who also had five rebounds.
Knox owned an 11-point advantage from the free throw line, hitting 14-of-17 attempts. The Prairie Fire had five players score in double figures.
Earlier in the week, the Rams had a 66-56 win against Monmouth.
March delivered 14 of her career-high 28 points in the final quarter of her final home game.
March stepped up when the Rams needed her most, trailing 39-33 early in the third quarter. The all-conference guard scored 19 points over the final 18 minutes of regulation, including four 3-pointers that helped Cornell regain control over the Fighting Scots.
After Monmouth pulled within 58-54 with 1:31 remaining, March reeled off Cornell’s final eight points to seal the victory.
March finished 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc, climbing into a tie with Tiffany Cowan (2005-09) for second place on Cornell’s career list for made threes with 143. She also became the 13th Ram to reach 800 points in a career, now at 808.
Ani’ja Simmons and Heidi Jorgensen pitched in nine points apiece for the Rams. Simmons led the team with six rebounds, while A’ryn Jackson collected four steals. March dished a team-high four assists.
