The Mustangs continued to stumble, then continued to get up, dust themselves off, and win.
Mount Vernon (11-5) lost to Center Point-Urbana on Tuesday, Jan. 23, 52-50, then turned around and beat Independence on Friday, jan. 26, 71-43.
CPU improved to 2-11 with the win over the Mustangs. The previous week, West Delaware got its firsts win of the season against the Mustangs.
“I think those losses result from not much practice time that was lingering from the beginning of the month,” Mount Vernon Coach Derek Roberts said. “Our team specifically needs lot of reps with how we do things and we weren’t able to get those reps. Both of those games, our opponents ran junk defenses that we were not used to seeing and so it took us some time to adjust.”
Still playing without all-Wamac forward Joey Rhomberg, the Mustangs continue to work on team chemistry.
Against Independence all five starters scored at least seven points, led by Jack Kutcher and Kellen Haverback with 16 each, then Cooper Parks with 12.
“I was proud of how our guys took care of business on Friday,” Roberts said.
Things don’t slow down, with home games against No. 8 Marion on Tuesday, Jan. 30, and No. 4 Solon on Friday, Feb. 2.
