Our thanks to the city crews at Mount Vernon and Lisbon, as they tackled a very busy week of snow removal in the area.
Like council member Craig Engel said at Mount Vernon’s city council meeting, this was a unique storm front generating two significant snow storms on top of one another back to back, giving crews limited time between storms to move snow from right of ways before the next storm was starting. Yes, there are mailboxes damaged in both Mount Vernon and Lisbon as city administrators have noted, buf that was due to limited area for more snow to go as crews were plowing streets. It’s going to take a few more weeks for crews to safely remove snow from the right of ways and parking lots.
For area schools, they made the calls that were correct in keeping all students safe. We understand the impact of closing area daycares had on parents and their families, especially for any other essential workers to be scrambling for childcare options for multiple days.
Many of these snow storms last week, however, were not fit for anyone to safely travel, least of all workers at those childcare centers who would have been on the roadways very early in the morning.
And we know it will have an impact on school schedules, that four or more days off for winter storms will have to be addressed in coming weeks or months. We’ve still got weeks of winter ahead.
With brutally cold temperatures that followed the storm Jan. 12, the importance of cold safety was reiterated. Multiple layers, limiting time outdoors, covering as much skin as possible was all required.
