Mount Vernon’s housing commission identified a need for more low-to-moderate income housing as a necessity for the community several years ago.
And the community is taking steps to increase those options with the Cottonwood Trail Apartments being designed along Glenn Street and constructed beginning this spring.
The new addition will add roughly 30 low-to-moderate income housing options for senior citizens, people who may be looking to downsize their housing options to fit their current housing needs.
This will in turn free up more homes in Mount Vernon for families and others, on top of the housing developments we currently have built.
The city’s responsibility for this plan is the necessary connection of utilities to the building and the construction of a new right of way street that will tie into Glenn Street and the local Business 30 roadway, on top of a $395,000 contract.
The project caters to a population the city knows needs more options in the community, instead of relocating from this community to locations like Cedar Rapids or Iowa City, further away from the friends and connections they’ve built.
Yes, the state identified maybe 30 was the maximum, reduced from an initial 45 apartments, but that is still 30 options opened for low-to-moderate income households in the community and increased options in the community. It may take a few years for the project to be completed, but it is a great benefit to the Mount Vernon community to see this LMi project moving forward.
