Most of Iowa, and a few more teams from out-of-state, were on hand for the Don Gable Donnybrook on Thursday and Friday at Xtream Arena in Coralville.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon finished 12th as a team with 232 points. Decorah won the event with 408 points, followed by Waverly-Shell Rock (367) and Bettendorf (363). Among Wamac schools, Vinton-Shellsburg was seventh (263.5).
Kiersten Swart led the way for the Mustangs, placing second at 110 pounds.
“I’m proud of the improvements and gains Swart has made this season,” MVL Coach Trevor Trende said. “She wrestled an outstanding tournament.”
Swart pinned her first four opponents before losing in the finals to Jaden Breeden of Liberty, a returning state champion.
Libby Dix (190) lost in the semifinals to Macy Barber of Omaha Westside, 7-5, and bounced back to beat Madison Hinrich of Waverly-Shell Rock for third, 6-0.
“Libby is a tough wrestler and took a minor speed bump this weekend,” Trende said. “This will motivate Libby to get the job done when it matters in February.
“This is why we attend this tournament, to wrestle tough competition, wrestle in a tough environment, and to learn. I am beyond proud of this team.”
Adeline Whisner (140) also wrestled to the semifinals and finished fourth. Meika Neal (140) was ninth.
“This is Adi’s first year wrestling, as a sophomore, so to have this success early in her firsts-ever season is incredible,” Trende said. “I look forward to her having more success this season.”
