Saturday, Nov. 3 marked the very first varsity competition for the Cornell Women’s Wrestling team. They competed in the open tournament at the Luther Hill Invitational in Indianola where sophomore Olivia Cotton finished fifth.
Everyone on the varsity team participated in the tournament for the Rams with five wrestlers reaching the quarterfinals. Three wrestlers recorded their first-ever program wins.
Getting their first-ever reps as a Rams wrestler included freshman Vaeh Carter, sophomore Isabella Moore, junior Emma Stevenson, and senior Kara Rivard.
Cotton placed fifth at the Invitational at 143 pounds defeating Justic Seely of Lindenwood University by fall (0:54). In the first round against Yazmine Perez of Waldorf University Cotton lost by fall (3:38) to move on to consolations. In consolations, Cotton received a bye to move to the consolations semifinal round against Aniseta Acosta of Missouri Valley College who she lost to 10-0 in a tech fall to move to the fifth-place match.
Chloe Loyd had a great showing at 116 pinning her first two opponents on her way to the quarterfinals. Her first opponent (Sara Arrojo of North Iowa CC) fell in 33 seconds and her second (Kaylee Campbell of Carl Albert) fell in 2:51.
Loyd’s quarterfinal match went down to the wire with Loyd unfortunately losing in an 8-2 decision to Rodiat Adeduntan of Iowa Central Community College. Loyd’s final match of the day came against Sereena Baca of Quincy in consolations, which resulted in a fall loss to Baca in 5:40.
Grace Fort garnered her first win in the second round of consolations at 191 pounds over Madelynn Grossnickle of Grand View (4:37 fall). Fort would move on to face Jayla Jones of Quincy University losing in a pin (1:39).
Bryalyyn Wagler, at 235 pounds, defeated Magalie Mogiga of Buena Vista University by pinning her in 28 seconds. In the quarterfinals, she fell to Gracie Orr of Ellsworth Community College, by fall (1:34). The consolations would see Wagler face Asia Young of Central College. Young defeated Wagler by fall in the 2:01.
