Robert E. Davis, 74, of Mechanicsville, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023.
A visitation was held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Marion. A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30, 2023, at the funeral home.
Robert was born to Earl and Margaret Davis April 3, 1949. He attended Mt. Vernon Schools and Kirkwood Community College. In 1975, Robert married Marie Brannaman in Mt. Vernon.
He served in the United States Army from 1968-71, including service in Vietnam from April 1969 to May 1970. While there, he was awarded with the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with Battle Stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, two Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Leaf medals, a Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star, a Vietnam Civic Action Medal, 1st Class Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation, a Meritorious Unit Citation, and a Bronze Star with Valor. While in Vietnam, he served with Troop “C” 2nd Squadron, 1st Calvary the “Blackhawks.” In 1980, Robert reentered the National Guard, serving with the 234th Signal Battalion at Cedar Rapids and with the 47th Aviation of Mt. Joy.
Robert was a member of Busch-Dennis Post #309, the American Legion of Mechanicsville, and was a past commander of the post. He was also a lifetime member of the Vietnam Veterans of America.
He worked for Linn County Road Department, Horton Ready Mix in Mt. Vernon, Harnischfeger in Cedar Rapids, drove charter buses for Charter Coaches and Tri-State Tours of Cedar Rapids, and most recently drove trucks for Don Hummer Trucking of Oxford.
Robert loved spending time with his family, friends and fellow members of his unit in Vietnam during the numerous reunions he and his wife attended over the years all over the country, tinkering with cars, watching NASCAR, as well with other friends whom he met over the years. Robert will be missed by those who knew and loved him.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Marie; daughter, Nicole (John) Mitchell; grandchildren, Olivia and Logan Mitchell; sister, Lucy; in-laws, Kevin Brannaman (partner, Andrew), Teresa (Juan) San Miguel, and Roxann Richardson; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
