Junior George Archer became Cornell’s new record holder for career goals scored, helping the Rams to a key 2-0 Midwest Conference men’s soccer win Saturday against Ripon at Hopp Stadium.
The Rams climbed into first place in the MWC points race with four matches left to go. Cornell earned its seventh consecutive series win over the Red Hawks.
Archer broke the program’s all-time goals mark with a penalty kick in the 69th minute that gave the Rams a 2-0 cushion. The two-time first team all-MWC selection jumped Mike Zarate (30 goals, 1992-95) atop Cornell’s career list.
Also Cornell’s career points leader, Archer registered his 31st goal in his 41st career match with the Rams. Eleven of his scores have come on penalty kicks.
Archer has netted seven goals this season, tying for the team lead with Aidan Lerch who also found the back of the net against Ripon. Lerch tallied Cornell’s initial goal in the 23rd minute.
Sophomore goalkeeper Floris Huiskers went the distance for his third shutout in the past three weeks. He collected five saves.
The Rams controlled possession and held a 17-8 advantage in total shots. Archer had a team-high five attempts. Lerch fired three shots on goal. Mason Parsley and Sam Burmeister had two attempts apiece.
