Cornell’s men’s tennis team racked up nine singles wins and finished with a 10-8 overall record over two days at the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Gustavus Adolphus.
Junior No. 1 player Alexander Hadler-Strumlauf went 1-1 in the main draw of ITA Singles. He won his opening match 6-4, 6-2 over St. John’s Ian Aadland. Hadler-Strumlauf then fell 6-1, 6-2 in the Round of 64 to fifth-seeded Gage Gohl of Gustavus Adolphus.
First-year Trent Devore also competed in the ITA Singles main draw, dropping a 6-1, 6-2 first-round decision to UW-Whitewater.
Hadler-Strumlauf and Devore finished 1-2 as doubles partners. They fell 8-4 to UW-Eau Claire in the ITA main draw. The Cornell tandem bounced back for an 8-2 consolation win over Bethany Lutheran and then lost 8-4 in their final match.
Sophomore Zachary Ong enjoyed a stellar 5-2 performance in singles play. He picked up two wins in the Midwest Open B Flight, including a 4-1, 5-3 win over Grinnell. Ong was edged by Luther’s Eli Young in the Round of 32 by scores of 4-5, 5-3, 10-4.
Ong went on to post consolation wins over St. Scholastic (8-0), Concordia (8-7) and Carroll (8-4). He dropped his final match, 8-3, to Concordia’s Landon Sather.
First-year Mills Arnold also had a strong outing in the Midwest Open C Singles Draw, going 3-1. He defeated Luther (4-0, 5-4), Saint Mary’s (4-0, 4-0) and Bethel (5-4, 1-4, 10-8) before falling in the Round of 16 to Will Deters of St. John’s by scores of 6-3, 6-3.
Ong and Arnold went 0-1 in Midwest Open B Doubles.
