The juniors held on for the win in the annual powderpuff championship game Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Lisbon Schools, against the seniors.
Addi Petersen got the juniors on the board early in the championship game, with six minutes to go in the first half. The extra points by Lillain Gaiser were good, bringing the score 8-0.
The seniors worked on driving the ball down the field over the next six downs, and came within a few yards of the end zone, but Gaiser was able to stop that drive.
In the second half, the juniors took their time on plays and ran down the clock in their last attempt at scoring, leaving the seniors with a minute to play in the game to try and make a touchdown to avoid a shutout.
That did not happen.
The seniors were not scoreless in games played Wednesday, however. Earlier in that night they shut out the ninth-graders in a 28-0 routing.
The seniors were helped as their defense removed flags from players very early in the ninth-graders attempts to gain yards.
The score was 16-0 for the seniors at halftime, and 22-0 with 6 minutes left to play. Ava Czarnecki intercepted a deep pass with five minutes to play and ran that back to the endzone to further drive home the win.
The juniors also had an early win, taking a 28-0 victory over the sophomores.
The game was 14-0 at the end of the first half, and 22-0 in the middle of the second half. The juniors added one more security touchdown on their last scoring drive, leaving the sophomores with a minute to play. The sophomores were not able to cross the endzone on that last attempt.
Senior Addy Happel noted one of the blunders in the game for the sophomores – letting the juniors select flag colors that blended in with their blue uniforms, an action she corrected before the seniors and juniors would meet up in the championship game.
